While my husband napped one on our second day at the coast, I walked to the nearby creamery. On top of buying a lot of cheese, I also got this cranberry cheesecake ice cream. The checkout clerk suggested I get child-size because they were “super generous with portions” — SO. I did. And it was obviously served up for the largest child ever!

Heading home from the coast!

Some of the oddest fish tacos ever. Leftover smoked sturgeon, two different smoked salmons, blackened petrale sole, sautéed petrale sole. Honey lime slaw and homemade tortillas. Oddly delicious.

Day to Day Life: Week 48 and 49

A look at the last couple weeks:

Lunch at Sammich with my Mother-in-Law one afternoon… I got the turkey – their house-brined roasted turkey, house-made cranberry sauce, mayo & lettuce on an italian loaf. So consistently good.
Forbidden Rice Blog | Day to Day Life Weeks 48-49 (1 of 20)

Nana got the “Nagurski Melt” special – house smoked pork loin, havarti, cheddar, arugula, green sriracha mayo, and grilled onions on italian loaf. Looked tasty!

A no-turkey feast.
Forbidden Rice Blog | Day to Day Life Weeks 48-49 (6 of 20)

The last of the Thanksgiving leftovers later in the week in one of the weirdest dinners I’ve made in a while. Pan fried mashed potato cakes with cheddar and ketchup, all the leftover roasted veggies pan fried with the remaining stuffing and roast, sweet potato casserole.
Forbidden Rice Blog | Day to Day Life Weeks 48-49 (7 of 20)

The Sunday after Thanksgiving was Craig’s birthday. He made a real complicated birthday meal request of veggie dogs, slaw, and potato salad. And a chocolate sheet cake with dark chocolate frosting.

The last few weeks in a series of photographs:

Upon cracking open my first bottles of kombucha, I discovered it’s the bubbliest, tastiest homemade ‘booch! I am very excited about future flavor possibilities!

Silas’s mom found a little injured bird at her workplace and called to see if I’d come get it… Because that’s what crazy bird ladies do.
Forbidden Rice Blog | Day to Day Life Weeks 34, 35, 36 2015 (5 of 21)

After figuring out what type of bird s/he was (I think a Hutton’s vireo), I figured out what it’d eat (bugs and berries mainly). Despite a good appetite, after a few days the little guy didn’t make it…
Forbidden Rice Blog | Day to Day Life Weeks 34, 35, 36 2015 (7 of 21)

We had a last-of-the-summer camping trip, which was also for the kickoff of Vincent’s water polo season. We camped with the team in Redmond, Oregon. Enroute to Eastern Oregon…

Making guacamole makes me miss the free Kaua’i avocados that used to grow in my backyard! Avos are expensive!
Forbidden Rice Blog | Day to Day Life Weeks 34, 35, 36 2015 (17 of 21)

Vincent’s 17th birthday was yesterday. We tried to surprise him a day early after water polo practice, which was a failure! Due to a little lightning and thunder the kids left early! Vincent wasn’t even there when we showed up! So we simply ate the cupcakes on his actual birthday, along with a little homemade pizza party with some friends and family. While I charged my camera intending to take some photos, I didn’t capture a single photograph other than the cupcakes the day prior!

My mom and stepdad sent us an island for our kitchen… When my stepdad asked me on the phone if my husband was “good at reading directions and putting things together?” I said, “Probably, but I’m good at that too!” So… I sat, a-buildin’ some shit for 3 hours.
